The study “Employment, productivity and wages: a sectoral perspective”, authored by sociologist Frederico Cantante, examines the intersection of these variables with the various sectoral and sub-sectoral realities and compares the Portuguese context with that of the EU-27.
Some of the conclusions point to an over-dimensioning of the Accommodation, Food and Similar Services (I) and Administrative Activities and Support Services (N) sectors in the Portuguese economy, highlighting a deepening predominance of the tertiary sector. However, a significant increase in the primary sector is also noted, while a pronounced decline in employment in industry is observed, with particular emphasis on the drop recorded in the Manufacturing Industries.
During the period analyzed, between 2013 and 2022, average real earnings increased by 10.6%, while real productivity registered a growth of 18.7%.
