The REMAKING Project, funded by the European Commission, aims to analyze Remote Work (RW) to provide policymakers with a more holistic and balanced view of the opportunities and risks associated with it, especially regarding its effects in rural areas and cities far from major urban centers.
Through a participatory research approach, the project examines four specific forms of remote work – digital nomadism, post-pandemic, highly skilled workers in high-tech sectors, and forced remote workers – and their effects on rural localities and second-tier cities in seven countries, including Portugal.
CoLABOR leads Work Package 4 (WP4) entitled “Economic and Social Effects of Remote Work,” which has four main objectives:
1. To evaluate the changes in the labor market resulting from the adoption of different forms of remote work and their effects on local employment conditions;
2. Examine the socioeconomic impacts on local populations, with a special focus on the effects on housing prices and patterns of social mobility;
3. Analyze the patterns of economic, cultural, and institutional restructuring caused by new local demographics, stimulating entrepreneurial and cultural activities and promoting new forms of knowledge sharing;
4. Assess changes in commuting practices and the demand for new mobility services resulting from increased travel time, including environmental implications and the supply of public mobility services.
