CoLABOR's publication on gender inequalities in the labor market marks International Women's Day

CoLABOR joins in the celebration of International Women's Day, celebrated on March 8th, with the launch of the publication "Gender inequalities in the labor market in Portugal: a brief statistical overview."

Starting from a framework of the main national and European policies promoting equality, the publication analyzes structural trends in female participation in the labor market in Portugal.

Based on data available on the DataLABOR, the analysis shows that in recent decades the country has seen a significant increase in women's qualifications and a high rate of female participation in employment, currently close to parity in terms of total employment volume.

However, the data show that significant inequalities in job quality persist. These manifest themselves in higher levels of underemployment and overqualification among women, underrepresentation in top organizational positions, and still significant pay differentials.

Despite the progress achieved, the authors emphasize that gender inequalities in the labor market remain structural and systemic, reflecting broader social asymmetries. In this context, they argue that strengthening and deepening public policies promoting equality continues to be fundamental to consolidating substantive equality in work and employment in Portugal.

This publication falls under the CoLABOR editorial line “Numbers in Analysis”, dedicated to the interpretation of statistical indicators on work, employment and social protection in Portugal.
