Abstract:
Gender inequalities are a multidimensional phenomenon that, across European countries and specifically in Portugal, penalize women in various spheres of life in society. Although the increasing feminization of the workforce is seen as an important process in promoting equal status between men and women, empowering them financially and guaranteeing them a set of employment-related rights, the labor market functions as a field where inequalities of resources and opportunities are (re)produced. One of the materializations of inequalities of opportunity and one of the factors contributing to wage inequalities between men and women are the "glass ceilings," that is, the invisible barriers that condition women's access to management positions. This trend is transversal to European countries (with varying incidences) and hinders the full development of women's skills and talent, which has negative consequences for their well-being and in economic terms.

The overall objective of this study is to analyze gender inequalities in access to management positions and remuneration for such professions, as well as to determine the social, economic, and institutional factors that frame these phenomena. To this end, a multi-scale analysis will be developed, combining quantitative and qualitative methodological approaches, through which it will be possible to answer a set of questions.
