Abstract:
This study, prepared by a multidisciplinary research team composed of technicians from the ILO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia (EUROPE), the ILO Employment Policy Department (EMPLOYMENT), and the Collaborative Laboratory for Work, Employment and Social Protection (CoLABOR), was commissioned by the Government of Portugal. Focusing on the automotive industry in Portugal, it seeks to investigate the interaction between automation and digitalization, as well as changes in business models, workforce structure, and general labor market conditions. It assumes that the future of work will not be predetermined by technological changes, but fundamentally determined by socioeconomic structures, institutions, the actions of key sector players, and public policies. It explores the scope and impact of labor-saving technologies, analyzes changes in professional profiles and skills requirements, and examines how technology affects the workforce, considering segmentation patterns in education and training, professions, and industry.
